Brendan James Vasquez is a 6 year old boy. He was born with congenital scoliosis, fused ribs and a clubbed left foot that was completely upside down. The technical name for Brendan's condition is called Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome, which he also has a severe case of congenital scoliosis and club foot.

His first surgery was a spinal surgery at 1yrs old. Since that time, he has had 36 surgeries, which are mostly on his back with 3 of those to repair his clubbed foot. Brendan's condition requires biannual surgeries (every 6 months) to "expand" the prosthetic devices (VEPTR) that are implanted in his back to simulate the growth of his spine. His parents have his treatment and care at the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, which was the ONLY place that would even consider working with Brendan and was the ONLY place that gave them a glimmer of hope during their pregnancy.

Dr. Robert Campbell is their saving grace and Brendan’s Orthopedic Thoracic Surgeon Specialist. The long term prognosis is that with these continued biannual surgeries he should have a normal adult life. However he will require these surgeries until he is about 16 years old. So he potentially can have up to 50-60 (or more) surgeries by that time.

Considering that the average person will have less than 6 surgeries over their entire life, this is an extremely staggering number. He had 5 Surgeries over this past Summer alone, because of recent complications from infection—so much so, they had to remove the hardware that is implanted on his back and will need to surgically re-implant them in the next few weeks.

Even though he didn’t have a good Summer last year, since he spent the entire month of July and part of August in the Hospital, Brendan is such a happy and strong boy. Just like any boy his age, he loves Legos, Disney World, Mixels and playing with his two older Brothers. The mental, physical and emotional stress on the entire family is something they try to manage.

It has become tougher as Brendan now “understands” when he has to go for surgery and the older two boys constantly question “why” their Brother has to go through this.

But, that is only eclipsed by the financial strain of the exorbitant costs of each surgery, lodging and travel expenses to/from Philadelphia as well as meals and childcare expenses as well as loss of pay from their jobs. On a regular basis, Brendan misses about 2.5 weeks of school with each surgery and his Mom, misses two weeks of work with each surgery (sometimes more)—of which she never has enough hours of vacation/sick time, which causes them to use FMLA and “temporary” disability.

They are constantly battling the insurance companies to cover their share of the expenses and just have ongoing payment plans. Unfortunately, this is going to continue for at least the next 10 years.
